Injibara University organized a discussion forum in collaboration with stakeholders under the theme “Mining Resource Development for National Economic Growth.”
The event, held on February 28, 2025, was spearheaded by the College of Engineering and Technology at Injibara University, focusing on the development of the mining sector.
In his opening speech, Dr. Kinde Birhane, Vice President for Research and Community Service and Representative of the University President, emphasized the institution’s commitment to advancing mining education and research. He highlighted the importance of training skilled professionals, conducting research, offering training programs, and ensuring that local communities benefit from the mining sector.
Dr. Kinde also noted that the forum aimed to facilitate discussions on utilizing the country’s mineral wealth, exploring strategies for sustainable mining, and addressing challenges through collaboration and capacity-building efforts.

The Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology, Mr. Demeke Alene, provided an overview of the college’s progress since its establishment in 2015. He stated that the college currently offers nine undergraduate and graduate programs, with 55 faculty members and 14 technical assistants actively engaged in teaching, research, and community service. He also emphasized the need for strengthening the mining engineering program to address the shortage of skilled professionals in Ethiopia’s mining sector.
Mrs. Tayech Zelke, Head of the Awi Zone Mining Administration Office, acknowledged the university’s role in supporting regional mining development. She stressed the economic significance of mining alongside agriculture and industry and expressed her office’s commitment to working closely with the university in training professionals and developing the sector.
During the forum, two keynote presentations were delivered: “The Role, Challenges, and Solutions for Mining Resource Development in Economic Growth” – Presented by Lecturer Yilachew Getachew and “Ethiopian Mining Potential and Sustainable Mining Development” – Presented by Lecturer Ageru Legesse.
These presentations sparked engaging discussions, where participants shared insights and feedback on mining opportunities, sustainable utilization, and sector challenges.
The forum was attended by senior university officials, Senate members, faculty from the College of Engineering and Technology, representatives from the Awi Zone Mining Administration Office, local government officials, and experts from the Amhara Regional Mining Bureau.
